See also: Mercurial's "mq" extension.  It's bundled with Mercurial and
the hg book has a few chapters devoted to it.  It mimics quilt's
command set and even uses the same basic storage layout of a patches
directory and directly-editable series file.  Edited files get added
to the current patch automatically and currently-applied patches show
up as commits in the history (with the patch name as a tag).

I don't know how it compares speed-wise to using quilt directly.
