OK. So (a) the issue is apparently with the "normal" way GTK programs
using macports handle keyboard input, so (as Teus has been saying
already) this is not a specifically-Bibledit issue.

I'm a bit familiar with the Mac and keyboard layouts, as I'm the developer of Ukelele, a program to edit and create keyboard layouts for Mac OS X. Having poor internet access here in Papua New Guinea, I'm loath to download the Mac source (I use Bibledit on a Linux virtual machine). If someone could email me the source of how the GTK/macports handle input, I might have some insight.
Also (b) there is something odd about your locale setting, it would seem.

Now what?
(1) Play with the locale stuff and see if you can get that error to go
away.  What does the program

   locale

output?

On my Mac, running that in terminal gives:
LANG=
LC_COLLATE="C"
LC_CTYPE="C"
LC_MESSAGES="C"
LC_MONETARY="C"
LC_NUMERIC="C"
LC_TIME="C"
LC_ALL=

Let me know if you think I can help.
