I guess you've only seen poorly written PHP... it IS possible to write
decent PHP, trust me...
PHP is basically the best of C++, Java and Perl put together. It's
object-oriented, but allows procedural programming as well. It can be run as
CGI or can be natively compiled into Apache (directly or as a module). For
web-developers, it's better than Perl, as it enables faster deployment.
For day-to-day command-line based administration, Perl or Python are better
ofcourse...
